Nexus 5 will be the main Google device that will in a way act as the main "official" Android flagship and rival of the iPhone 5s. Recent benchmarks show that in addition to sharing a number, and potentially the 5s and 5c designation, the Nexus 5 slightly beats the iPhone 5s in graphic benchmark scores. A recent graphic benchmark came from the GFXBench website and it clearly shows that the Nexus 5 is leaps and bounds ahead of all its Android rivals, and slightly surpasses the iPhone 5s in capabilities beating it by a score of 23.1 to 23.
The Nexus 5 specs include a 5-inch HD 1080p display with a Snapdragon 800 and Adreno 330 GPU. It turns out that the Nexus 5 scores 23, matching the iPhone 5s at 23 and surpassing the Sony Xperia Z1 at 21, LG G2 at 20, Samsung Galaxy S4 at 16, HTC One at 15 and the iPhone 5 at 6.8. Phones arena shows that the Nexus 5 scores excellently when it comes to two game simulation tests including the T-Rex 2.7 test which is a graphically intensive benchmark that is, "designed to show off maximum workload that games will put on mobile devices.
" A score of 23.1 frames per second for the Nexus 5 means that the Googledevice will perform excellently when it comes to games and clearly indicates that the Adreno 330 GPU used by the device can match the Imagination Technologies' 6 series chips and Power G6430 used by the iPhone 5s. The only other chip capable of supporting the technology is the ARM Mail-T6xx. This is encouraging for Android users following news of the first touchscreen benchmark, which the iPhone 5s dominated. In terms of touchscreen sensitivity, the iPhone 5s display showed that it was 2.5 times more responsive than the nearest Android flagships like the Samsung Galaxy S4, HTC One and Moto X. The fact that the Nexus 5 can likely hold its own against the iPhone 5s is good to hear. The 5-inch device will likely outstrip the iPhone 5s as a gaming device and in terms of multimedia capabilities.
The Nexus 5 and iPhone 5s graphics benchmark scores show that Android flagships are more than capable of taking on the Apple flagship. Another benchmark test for the 2.5 Egypt HD CZ24Z16 off-screen test shows the Nexus 5 at a staggering 59.2 FPS. There is little doubt that the Nexus 5 will be the Android device of the year, particularly if Google makes it about as affordable as the Nexus 4. By our estimation the Nexus 5 will likely cost about $360, a fair price taking into account its bleeding edge hardware and software. The Nexus 4 16GB is currently $299 by comparison.
To get a frame of reference to compare the Nexus 5 to the iPhone 5s, the latest specs leaks suggest that the device has the following:
- 4.96-inch display, 1080 x 1920 pixel resolution
-Quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 chip (MSM8974)
-Android 4.4 KitKat
-Multiple LTE bands - support for Verizon, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile
-Pentaband HSPA+ (works across the globe)
-Nexus 7-like design
-2300mAh battery
The Nexus 5 and iPhone 5s will be interesting to compare to side by side. The Nexus 5 is the closet equivalent we have to a Google flagship despite being produced by LG. The Nexus 5 will get dedicated Android OS update support, being the first device to run Android 4.4 KitKat and be the first in line for updates. This is something many Android devices have struggled with, and fragmentation in the Android market continues to be a major problem to grapple with in contrast to the super-optimized iOS7 hardware and software. For the first time with the Nexus line of devices, and the Android 4.4 KitKat update, we might see a significant reduction in Android fragmentation. Then Apple will really be given a run for its money.
